As we navigate the complexities of modern life, many of us struggle to find a balance between our family and career goals. This is a challenge that has been debated by sociologists and psychologists for decades, with some advocating for the importance of family roles and others emphasizing the need for career advancement.

However, as women increasingly take on leadership positions in organizations, the traditional notion of the adult male as the sole breadwinner is being reevaluated. In today's society, it is not uncommon for both parents to work and contribute to the family's financial well-being.

So, how do we achieve a balance between our family and career goals? One approach is to consider the concept of work-life integration, rather than balance. This involves recognizing the importance of the presence of parents in a child's life for healthy socialization, while also allowing individuals to pursue their own career goals.

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs suggests that self-actualization is the ultimate desire of an individual, after meeting their physiological, safety, sense of belonging, and self-esteem needs. Yet, leadership roles at work can create conflicts with family life, and it is essential to consider the role of support from the family in helping individuals attain their goals.

Family therapists, such as those at the Amani Counselling and Training Institute, can help individuals navigate these challenges. By externalizing the pressures of work and seeking psychological support, individuals can develop new perspectives and learn to prioritize their family life without sacrificing their career goals.

For example, a parent who allows their work to dominate their life may need to seek counseling to recognize the impact of their behavior on their family. By working with a family therapist, they can learn to prioritize their family time and develop strategies to manage the demands of work and family life.

Ultimately, achieving a balance between family and career goals requires a willingness to seek support and develop new perspectives. By recognizing the importance of work-life integration and seeking psychological support, individuals can overcome the challenges of work-family conflicts and achieve their goals.

As Amani Counsellors Milly Njuguna, Christine Mutingu, and Faith Gichanga Osiro note, 'A counsellor can assist the client facing work-family challenges to refer to the problems at work as though it existed outside the client.' This approach can help individuals develop a new understanding of their work and family life, and learn to prioritize their family time without sacrificing their career goals.
