On October 20, 2019, Mashujaa Day celebrations took place in Mombasa, with President Uhuru Kenyatta in attendance.

However, the event was marred by controversy after Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was seen being escorted out of the VIP area by security officers.

Waititu later addressed the incident, stating that he had not received an invitation to the event and had mistakenly believed that he could attend without one.

He claimed that he left the event after realizing there was no seat reserved for him at the VIP podium, and denied allegations that he was thrown out due to corruption cases facing him.

“What caused the confusion was that I did not have an invitation card for Mashujaa day. I thought it was just the normal Mashujaa Day where you can show up uninvited, but I was wrong,” Waititu told journalists.

He also denied reports that President Kenyatta was avoiding him due to corruption cases, stating that there was no bad blood between them.
