On October 23, 2019, Erick Ademba, a dedicated teacher at Asumbi Girls High School, was recognized for his exceptional work with a prestigious Africa Union award.
Alongside two other African educators, Augusta Lartey-Young from Ghana and Gladys K from Uganda, Mr. Ademba received the honor at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The award, which comes with a $10,000 prize and a certificate, acknowledges the recipients' commitment to helping students achieve their long-term career goals, providing quality teaching, and promoting desirable behavior in schools.
Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Ademba emphasized the significance of the prize in promoting the image of teaching on the African continent and motivating African teachers to be innovative.
"The award will improve teaching image since teachers in Africa will feel recognized," Mr. Ademba said.
Beatrice Njenga, Head of AU Education Division, highlighted the importance of the teacher prize in contributing to the success of Agenda 2063 and the continental Education strategy for Africa (CESA).
"It will enhance visibility and status of the teacher in Africa at all levels from early childhood to tertiary levels including TVET, and promote teaching as a first choice profession," Ms. Njenga noted.
