Retired President Daniel Arap Moi celebrated Mashujaa Day at his home in Kabarnet Gardens, Nairobi, on Sunday, October 20th, 2019. He had been discharged from Nairobi Hospital a week earlier, where he had been admitted for a routine medical checkup on October 13th.

According to Moi's Press Secretary, Lee Njiru, the former President followed the Mashujaa Day celebrations live on television, surrounded by close family members and friends.

“Mzee Moi celebrated Mashujaa Day at his Kabarnet Gardens home in Nairobi with close family members and friends," Njiru said in a statement.

He added: "He saluted heroes and heroines whose hard work, courage, patriotism, and perseverance have had a great impact on the socio-economic wellbeing of the country and urged Kenyans to emulate them and contribute towards the prosperity of the country."

Dr. David Silverstein, Moi's personal physician, had given him a clean bill of health, allowing him to return home.

This was not Moi's first hospital visit in recent years. In December 2018, he was taken to Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical examination, and in March 2018, he underwent surgery in Israel for a knee problem that had been troubling him since 2006, when he was involved in a car accident in Limuru.
