On October 23, 2019, the Africa Union recognized three outstanding teachers at a ceremony in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the first continental teacher prize.
Erick Ademba, a teacher at Asumbi Girls School in Kenya, Augusta Lartey-Young from Presbyterian Boy’s Secondary School in Ghana, and Gladys K. from a school in Uganda received the prestigious award.
Mr. Ademba was awarded a certificate and Sh1 million for his outstanding performance, which included helping students achieve their long-term career goals, quality teaching, and encouraging desirable behaviors in schools.
Speaking after receiving the award, Mr. Ademba emphasized the importance of promoting the image of teaching on the African continent, saying, "The award will improve teaching image since teachers in Africa will feel recognized."

Beatrice Njenga, Head of AU Education Division, noted that the teacher prize is an important instrument that contributes to the success of Agenda 2063 and the continental Education strategy for Africa (CESA).
