On October 23, 2019, Ekuru Aukot, leader of the Thirdway Alliance party, acknowledged that his Punguza Mizigo bill had failed and would seek an alternative route to amend the constitution.
Aukot stated that his party would explore other options to ensure the constitution is amended, citing the need to engage with the public and consider their suggestions.
He emphasized that the party would not give up on its goal of amending the constitution, but would instead seek a new approach to achieve this objective.
The Punguza Mizigo bill required the support of at least 24 county assemblies to succeed, but it only managed to secure the approval of Uasin Gishu and Turkana counties out of the 47.
Aukot's statement came after the bill failed to meet the required threshold in the first round of voting, with 22 county assemblies rejecting it.
