Published on October 23, 2019, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned of continued heavy rains in the East African region.
The NOAA has recorded extremely heavy rainfall in Kenya and neighboring countries, with levels exceeding 625% of normal rainfall.
Wassila Thiaw, a NOAA meteorologist, attributed the heavy rainfall to winds from the western Indian Ocean, which contribute to the moisture surplus in the region.
Flash floods have displaced thousands of people and swept away hundreds of livestock, with the Kenya Red Cross urging everyone to take necessary precautions to avoid loss of lives and property.
"We have never seen this much rainfall. It has caused so much destruction. We are circled by water. Houses are destroyed, rivers have overflown. We are moving to the higher ground to save our lives and animals," said Galma Dabaso, who lives in Walda.
