Nairobi Expressway Sparks Outrage Over Uhuru Park Plans

President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the construction of the 27-kilometer Nairobi Expressway last week, which will connect Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Westlands. The project, valued at Sh65 billion, is a public-private partnership between the government and the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

The expressway will feature a double-decker design with multiple interchanges and a bus rapid transit system to ease congestion. However, the plans have sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Kenyans expressing their opposition to the project's impact on Uhuru Park.

Uhuru Park, a popular recreation ground, is set to be affected by the construction of the expressway. The park is a significant green space in the city and holds sentimental value for many Kenyans, who see it as a symbol of the country's struggle for independence.

Several Twitter users have expressed their opposition to the project, with some calling for the government to explore alternative routes that do not involve the park. Others have vowed to take action to protect the park, citing the legacy of environmentalist Wangari Maathai, who fought to preserve the park.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the government will reconsider its plans for the expressway and find alternative solutions that do not compromise the integrity of Uhuru Park.
