On October 17, 2019, the Department of Justice issued a circular directing its staff to wear 'Made in Kenya' attire on Fridays. The move aims to support the manufacturing sector and create employment, in line with the Big Four agenda.
According to the circular, all members of staff are required to wear decent, smart casual Kenyan-produced and tailored attire on Fridays, starting from October 18, 2019. The dress code is subject to the guidelines outlined in the Public Service Commission's human resource policies and procedure manual.
President Uhuru Kenyatta had previously urged public servants to wear 'Made in Kenya' garments to boost the local textile industry. In June, he presided over the reopening of Rivatex in Eldoret and encouraged public servants to proudly wear Made in Kenya garments.
Standard Group PLC CEO Orlando Lyomu has also been promoting the 'Made in Kenya' initiative, as seen in a photo with Moi University's Vice-Chancellor Isaac Kosgey, who presented him with a cotton shirt made by Rift Valley Textiles (RIVATEX) early this year.
