On October 20th, Kenyans witnessed a dramatic Mashujaa Day celebration, with several high-profile figures making headlines. However, behind the scenes, a more intricate plot was unfolding, as revealed by a leaked WhatsApp conversation.
According to the conversation, ODM leader Raila Odinga visited State House Mombasa on the eve of the celebrations, but was denied entry because President Uhuru Kenyatta was holding a meeting with military leaders. Raila was asked to return the following day for breakfast, which he did, accompanied by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and his counterpart Amason Kingi.
However, when the President failed to show up for breakfast at 9:30 am, the trio left, only to be informed that Deputy President William Ruto had arrived at Mombasa State House and was holed up in a meeting with the President. Raila, Joho, and Kingi then proceeded to the venue, where Ruto and Uhuru eventually arrived.
Interestingly, the military had left Raila out of the list of speakers, but Joho broke protocol by inviting him to speak. While Joho and Raila dwelled on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), Uhuru and Ruto avoided the topic altogether.
Apparently, Raila was miffed by the snub, and as a result, he absconded the after-party that followed the Mashujaa fete.
