On October 1, 2019, a multi-agency security team conducted a raid in Mombasa, arresting two suspects, Bakari Chibonja and Athuman Nyae, who were planning to attack key government installations during Mashujaa Day celebrations.

According to intelligence officers, the two suspects were part of a group of Somali-based militants who had planned to carry out the attack on October 20, 2019.

“Intelligence report shows that the accused persons and others who are still at large were planning a major attack during Mashujaa Day in Mombasa using the assorted weapons recovered from their residence in Dudus,” Anti-Terror Police Unit investigator Dickson Indaru said in an affidavit.

During the raid, the security team discovered weapons of mass destruction, and the two suspects were charged with terror-related offenses, including harbouring terrorists and being members of the militant group.

The case will be heard on November 11, 2019.
