Marriage: A Cocktail of Bitter Sweet Experiences

Marriage is a journey that comes with its fair share of challenges and triumphs. While some couples have successfully navigated the ups and downs of marriage to celebrate double-digit anniversaries, others have met their demise in the turmoil of life.

Published on October 23, 2019, three couples who have been married for over 25 years share their experiences on what makes their marriages work.

The Mulambas: 27 Years of Marriage

Margaret and Ken Mulamba have been married for 27 years and have three children. They attribute their successful marriage to communication, forgiveness, and never going to bed angry.

According to Margaret, 'Marriage works. That is the first testament I would like to give. That marriage works.'

However, their marriage was not without its challenges. Margaret once had a heated argument with one of her in-laws in her husband's presence, which made her feel unprotected. She had to forgive and let go of the hurt.

Ken, on the other hand, attributes their successful marriage to communication and never threatening each other with separation and divorce. He also emphasizes the importance of focusing on each other's strengths and appreciating each other's efforts.

The Wahogos: 36 Years of Marriage

John and Eunice Wahogo have been married for 36 years and have three children. They share their experiences on what makes their marriage work, including confiding in each other and intentionally planning together.

Eunice wishes she knew about her husband's financial struggles before they got married. She had expected a life of luxury, but their finances were strained due to her husband's family obligations.

John, on the other hand, attributes their successful marriage to developing a culture of open communication from the very onset. He emphasizes the importance of sharing deeply and seeking to understand each other.

The couple also shares their experience of losing their last-born son to muscular dystrophy. However, this difficult time brought them closer together as they confided in each other and sought to understand each other's feelings.
