As the long school holiday approaches, parents in Murang'a have been warned to keep a close eye on their children to prevent them from indulging in social vices.
According to Kiharu Assistant County Commissioner Priscilla Kiluta, students are exposed to various social lives during the holidays and may fall victim to immorality if not properly monitored.
Ms. Kiluta noted that some illegal gangs are targeting school leavers to join their criminal groups, with gangs like Mungiki and Gaza being particularly active in the area.
"We request parents to work with Interior administrators to save our children from various social vices," Ms. Kiluta said, urging parents to be vigilant and prevent their children from falling into the hands of criminals.
Residents of Murang'a have also complained about the reemergence of Mungiki, which is trying to take control of matatu stages, and the Gaza group, which has been accused of terrorizing residents in the area.
Ms. Kiluta also warned that criminals selling bhang are targeting school-going children and that parents should help the authorities to nab these individuals.
She noted that the abuse of alcohol has gone down following a crackdown by area chiefs and their assistants, but that selling of illicit brews remains a concern.
