On October 23, 2019, three Football Kenya Federation (FKF) presidential aspirants, Sam Nyamweya, Moses Akaranga, and Steve Mburu, announced their decision to boycott the nomination exercise ahead of the federation's elections on December 7.

The nomination exercise, which was set to take place at FKF's headquarters at Kandanda House, Kasarani, from 10am, was deemed unfair by the trio, who cited the inclusion of 'ghost' clubs and officials in the election register and 'draconian' rules governing the exercise.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa, who is seeking a second four-year term in office, confirmed that he would be participating in the nomination exercise, stating, 'I have faith in the Board to conduct a credible election. My team has done some impressive work to fix football and we will do more if handed a second chance by the delegates.'

However, Akaranga expressed his dissatisfaction with the process, saying, 'Why collect a paper and pay Sh400,000 when this (election) exercise has already been rigged in favour of that boy called Mwendwa?' Nyamweya also stated that he would not be participating in the exercise, citing its flaws.
