On October 23, 2019, the Alcohol Beverages Association of Kenya (Abak) cautioned retailers against increasing beer prices in anticipation of higher excise duty rates.
Abak Chairman Gordon Mutugi noted that despite clear price guidelines, some retailers were selling the same products at vastly different prices in different areas. He cited an example of a bottle of beer being sold at Sh140 in one part of town and Sh500 in another.
Abak is awaiting a final decision from President Uhuru Kenyatta on its appeal to stop the higher excise duty rates.
