Safaricom has taken a bold step in the face of a lawsuit, introducing a data plan with no expiry date. This move comes just hours after lawyer Adrian Kamotho filed a suit against the telco and others at the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal.

The new data plan, available through the My Safaricom app, allows customers to choose any amount they wish to spend, and the app will calculate the data bundle it is worth. According to Safaricom's calculations, data gets cheaper the more you spend, with 2.00MBs costing Sh1 and 5GB costing Sh1000 for a Sh1000 spend.

Customers can buy up to Ksh70,000 worth of data without an expiry date, and the option to buy data directly from M-Pesa wallet is also available. While Safaricom has not done away completely with data bundles that expire, it is the only telco to have reacted to the lawsuit so far.

Mr. Kamotho had filed the suit in hopes of getting orders issued to stop the loss of unused data bundles after the expiry date. He also asked the tribunal to issue orders barring the application of differing prices for in-bundle and out-of-bundle costs.
