On October 22, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) faced mounting pressure to disqualify Jubilee flag bearer McDonald Mariga from participating in the Kibra by-elections.

Mariga, a former footballer, was accused by other aspirants of engaging in electoral malpractices, including open bribery during his campaigns.

The other candidates in the November 7 snap poll condemned Mariga, citing the use of state resources to solicit votes.

During a meeting with IEBC officials, the 23 candidates present expressed opposition to Mariga's participation in the poll, citing breaches of election regulations.

Mariga remained tight-lipped during the meeting, refusing to respond to accusations from his rivals.

The candidates also raised concerns over the delayed issuance of the updated voters register, fearing it might be a plot to alter the voter register in favor of one of the candidates.

IEBC assured the candidates that it was committed to overseeing a credible exercise.
