On October 22, 2019, a parliamentary committee sounded the alarm over the potential loss of Sh38 billion in advance payments for dam projects awarded to foreign companies.
The committee's concerns centered around five contracts that were either yet to start, moving slowly, stalled, or terminated, with billions of shillings already paid out.
The affected dams include Itare, Karimenu II, Badasa, Umaa, and Thwake, as well as Chemususu and Northern Collector Tunnel.
The government's failure to exercise due diligence in the selection of contractors and monitoring of projects has led to a significant loss of public funds, leaving taxpayers to bear the burden of lost water services.
It is unacceptable that such scandals have become commonplace in Kenya, a country with advanced skills and international collaborations that should ensure the successful execution of key projects.
