Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia are facing a financial crisis, with the club yet to receive the KSh 4 million prize money for winning the title in May 2019.

According to the club's treasurer, Sally Bolo, KPL has not wired the money to their account, citing the withdrawal of SportPesa's sponsorship as the reason for the delay.

Despite the financial struggles, Gor Mahia clinched their record 18th title under then head coach Hassan Oktay with two matches to spare, amassing an impressive 69 points.

However, the club is currently grappling with a serious financial crisis that has seen several of their senior players reportedly go for months without pay.

As the club struggles to stay afloat, fans are calling for the KPL to disburse the prize money to help alleviate the financial burden.

"We are struggling financially and to be honest we have not been paid by KPL for winning the 2018 title," Bolo intimated to Goal.

"We are owed Sh4m by the league managers by virtue of winning the league and we understand the situation because KPL is broke. They don’t have money now because SportPesa pulled out as the title sponsors," he noted.

"I don’t think it will be fair for us to blame KPL because they are in the same position as [Gor Mahia]," he added.
