Cybercrime on the Rise in Kenya ¶
October 22, 2019
Kenya is not immune to cybercrime, a notion that many people believe only affects developed countries. In fact, cybercrime has been on the rise in Kenya, with millions of Kenyans falling prey to online fraud and data breaches every year.
According to a report by the Communications Authority, the number of cyber events in Kenya has been increasing, with 10.2 million cyber events reported in 2018/2019. This is a significant concern, especially for individuals and businesses that rely heavily on digital transactions.
Individual Online Fraud ¶
Individuals are often targeted by cybercriminals through social media, hacking, unsolicited calls and emails, and bank account details. Once an intruder gains access to a person's personal space, they can manipulate their data, analyze their financial information, and even siphon their finances.
It is essential for individuals to be cautious when accessing their accounts online, especially when using public Wi-Fi. Hackers can easily plant malware on devices, compromising passwords and data.
Company Attack ¶
Companies and organizations are also vulnerable to cyberattacks, which can disrupt their normal functioning and compromise their data. Advanced cyberattacks involve gangs of IT specialists who study a company's systems, access websites, emails, or computer systems, and disrupt their normal functioning.
Phishing attacks are another common cyber security threat, where malicious software is implanted in emails or links, compromising passwords and data.
Measures to Curb Cybercrime ¶
Companies must remain firm and strong in keeping their data and maintaining other services. They should have a good approach in handling computer services and data to keep away cybercrime and computer-related activities.
Employing computer experts who can develop Incident Response Plans and maintain the company's systems is crucial. These experts can offer training to staff on detecting threats and take immediate measures to prevent cybercrime.
