On October 22, 2019, Moi University took a significant step towards boosting Kenya's ICT sector by unveiling a range of premium ICT devices assembled at its Technologies Digital Assembly Plant.

The plant, which was officially inaugurated in June, has so far assembled 150,000 ICT devices for the Kenya Digital Literacy Program and another 70,000 tablets for the recent national census exercise.

With a capacity to produce 4,500 devices per day, the half a billion shillings digital plant is an investment by Moi University and jp.ik, a Portuguese Information and Communication Technologies company.

ICT Principal Secretary Dr. Jerome Ochieng emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that plans are underway to optimize the assembly's output and provide a ready market for the devices under the 'buy Kenya Build Kenya Initiative.'

Dr. Ochieng also urged institutions to customize relevant courses for the job market amid growing demand for ICT professionals in the digital space.

He called on county governments to support the initiative by ordering ICT devices directly from the factory, saying, 'We are therefore encouraging Kenyans to buy these locally assembled computers because buying Kenya ultimately builds Kenya.'
