On October 22, 2019, hundreds of locals and several leaders attended the emotional burial of Mariam Kighenda and her four-year-old daughter Amanda Mutheu in Mung'ala village, Kilome Constituency, Makueni County.

The tragic incident occurred three weeks prior when the mother and daughter died after their vehicle slid off the ferry and plunged into the Indian Ocean in Mombasa.

Leaders present at the burial, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana, and Senator Mutula Kilonzo, called for an overhaul of the Kenya Ferry Service, citing the management's failure to implement safety measures for commuters.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had previously disbanded the Kenya Ferry board and sacked its members following concerns over commuter safety at the Likoni Channel.
