On October 22, 2019, a group of twenty Kenyans petitioned the High Court to withdraw Kenya's participation in a border dispute filed by Somalia before the International Court of Justice.

The petitioners, represented by lawyer Kibe Mungai, argued that the decision to participate in the suit was wrong, citing a risk of forfeiting part of Kenya's territory if the ICJ rules in favor of Somalia.

According to Mungai, the government should prioritize national interest and territorial integrity, and the only way to do that is not to compromise its territorial integrity.

However, the government, represented by lawyer Paul Nyamodi, argued that the petition is based on an assumption that the ICJ will rule in favor of Somalia.

Nyamodi stated that Kenya has taken steps to ensure the best interest of its citizens, territorial integrity, and independence are not compromised.

The judges will rule on the matter on November 7.
