On October 22, 2019, lawyer Adrian Kamotho, chairperson of the ICT Association of Kenya, filed a lawsuit against Safaricom, Airtel Kenya, and Telkom Kenya at the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunal.
Kamotho is seeking to prevent the telcos from deactivating customers' unused data bundles upon expiry, arguing that this practice is irrational and discriminatory.
According to Kamotho, data bundles should not have an expiry date until they are used up, as long as the SIM card is active and the consumer continues to recharge.
He also wants the telcos to provide customers with clear data tariffs and display them on their websites, allowing users to track their usage.
This is not the first time Kenyan consumers have spoken out against data bundle expiry policies. In June 2018, former Kiambu governor William Kabogo threatened to sue the network vendors over their practices.
