On October 22, 2019, Petroleum and Mining Cabinet Secretary John Munyes made a significant move in the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK), appointing George Kubai as the interim Managing Director. This decision reverses the agency's earlier installation of James Nyamongo.
George Kubai, who has served NOCK as the General Manager for downstream operations, has been tasked with leading the corporation until a substantive Managing Director is appointed.
The appointment follows fresh consultations between the ministry and the corporation's board, which allows for the commencement of the recruitment process for a substantive Managing Director.
Notably, this move comes after Maryjane Mwangi, who had been at the helm of NOCK for 11 years, chose to cut ties with the corporation, bringing her tenure to a close in a communique to the board dated October 9.
The exit of Maryjane and her subsequent replacement with an interim chief has extended the recruitment process within State Corporations, which also includes an active recruitment process for a chief executive post in the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).
Interestingly, James Nyamongo, who was previously appointed as the Managing Director, had been tapped from KPC's management team, where he served as the Facilities and Wayleave General Manager.
