On October 22, 2019, detectives made a breakthrough in the murder case of Catholic Priest Michael Maingi Kyengo, with two suspects, Michael Mutunga and Solomon Mutava, set to be arraigned in court later that day.

The suspects were arrested a day after the body of the priest was discovered along Mashamba River in Mbeere South, following a gruesome murder that had shaken the community.

According to reports, the priest was kidnapped on October 8, 2019, while traveling from Tala to his Thatha parish in Masinga, and was later strangled to death before being buried in a shallow grave.

On October 16, 2019, the body of the priest was exhumed, and detectives have since recovered crucial evidence, including bank withdrawal receipts, newly purchased household items, supermarket receipts, and blood-stained clothes, which have been taken to the government chemist for forensic analysis.

A sharp knife believed to have been used to kill the priest was also recovered from a pit latrine, and the garage where the deceased's vehicle was changed from black to white on October 12, 2019, was identified.
