On Sunday, President Uhuru Kenyatta marked the 10th Mashujaa Day celebrations by officially opening the revamped Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa, a project undertaken at a cost of Sh460 million.
Located on a 26-acre site overlooking the Kilindini Channel, the park has been transformed into an integrated urban tourist attraction site, featuring a range of amenities including an amphitheatre, the Kilindini Cultural Centre, and open-air fresco restaurants and cafes.
According to the Tourism ministry, the park is designed to support a 24-hour economy and its layout includes a new jetty for water taxis, aiming to attract more local and foreign tourists to Mombasa, Kenya's oldest town and the country's second city.
President Kenyatta had commissioned the construction of the park in January, expressing his expectation that it would restore Mombasa's status as a top tourist destination in the region.
The redevelopment was undertaken by local company Suhufi Agencies and was completed in time for the Mashujaa Day celebrations, which featured a range of entertainment activities including fireworks displays, traditional dances, and acrobatic shows.
