Kenyan police have cracked down on a new trend in ATM-related crimes, where criminals use security guards to withdraw cash without being captured by CCTV cameras.

According to Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, the suspects have been working with security guards stationed at various ATMs, who they recruit to withdraw fraudulently acquired money after sending them secret codes.

"Upon withdrawing the money conned from unsuspecting members of the public, the said guards have been taking share and sending the rest to the suspect," Kinoti said.

Police arrested the suspect and two other guards following an investigation, which revealed that the two guards had sent more than Sh2.2 million to the prime suspect in September alone.

Kinoti also warned that kidnappers are using security guards to withdraw cash from ATMs for a fee, and warned the guards to be careful and avoid such tricks, as they will face the law if caught.

Police have been investigating cases of bank fraud in which Kenyans have lost millions of shillings, and have arrested 12 suspects in a recent operation, recovering over 40,000 SIM cards in Kiambu County.
