On October 7, Kenyatta University was closed due to student unrest, but the institution has now announced its re-opening dates.

According to a memo sent out by the University, students will report back to campus on different dates depending on their course.

Students in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Applied Human Sciences, Engineering and Technology, and Architecture and Built Environment will report on Monday, October 21, with lectures set to begin on Tuesday, October 22.

Those undertaking Environmental Studies, Agriculture and Enterprise Development, Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Studies, Security, Diplomacy and Peace Studies, Business, Economics, Creative and Performing Arts, and Film and Media will report on Tuesday, October 22, with classes resuming on Wednesday, October 23.

Students in Pure and Applied Sciences, Education, Humanity and Social Sciences will report on Wednesday, October 23, with classes beginning on Thursday, October 24.

As part of the re-opening, all undergraduate students at the main campus will be required to pay Ksh.500 for damages incurred during the strike.

The student unrest was sparked by welfare issues, including an early deadline for fees payment, the administration forcefully directing students from Nyayo hostel to use a fly over within the institution, and the suspension of fellow students and student leaders on 'petty basis.'

Student leader Joshua Ayika led the protest, demanding the resignation of Prof. Wainaina over what they termed as 'historical injustices.'

They also accused the school administration of charging Ksh.2500 for supplementary examinations.
