Heavy rains have continued to cause widespread destruction across Kenya, resulting in the deaths of at least ten people over the weekend.

According to reports, four members of a family were swept away by flash floods in Elgeyo Marakwet, while three others drowned in Turkana.

Two children lost their lives in West Pokot due to the heavy downpour, and a 54-year-old man was killed in Busia when a large amount of water overflowed.

As the death toll rises, scores of families have been displaced and dozens of livestock swept away in flash floods.

On a positive note, humanitarian organisations, including the Kenya Red Cross Society, have begun distributing food supplies to families affected by the floods in Turkana.

At Nakwamekwi village, 200 households received 10 kilogrammes of maize and an equal amount of beans each.

Deputy county secretary Robert Loyelei urged residents living in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground, but residents complained that there were no designated areas to relocate to.

The County Government has pledged to support the flood-affected households and public schools with foodstuff and non-food items, and will also provide water with bowsers to the most affected areas until the water supply is restored.
