On October 21, 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Gateway Global in Africa, a multi-faceted professional services firm, to upgrade slums in Kenya.

The new initiative aims to address the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of development in the communities served by UN-Habitat, including Kenya. According to Rahma Hersi, Head of Gateway Global in Africa, the SDG 11 project will upgrade slums, make human settlements safe, sustainable, and easily accessible.

The partnership will also see Kenya develop its human settlement areas by making them safe and sustainable for all. The housing deficit in Kenya stands at two million and continues to grow at a rate of about 200,000 units a year.

Gateway Global in Africa is a professional services firm that enables its clients to enter new markets and has partners in the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, and East Africa. The organisation has expertise in areas such as gender equity and inclusivity, digital strategy, and social responsibility.
