On October 21, 2019, a devastating incident occurred at Muisuni High school in Kangundo, Machakos County, Kenya, where a pit latrine collapsed due to heavy rains, resulting in the death of a student and injuring another.

The incident was confirmed by Muisuni High School director, Robert Thyaka, who stated that the latrine collapsed due to the heavy rains witnessed in the area.

The injured student was taken to Kangundo Hospital for treatment before being transferred to a Machakos hospital for a CT scan, where they were found to be in stable condition.

Additionally, Kangundo OCPD, Benjamin Ong'ombe, reported that the body of the deceased student had been transferred to the Kangundo Hospital mortuary.

Separately, in Matungu sub-county, Kakamega County, sixteen private schools operating illegally were closed down by authorities.

Area Deputy County Commissioner, Jacob Awuor, explained that a committee had been set up to investigate the operations of public and private schools in the area, which found that the schools were operating without meeting the requirements of the Ministry of Education.

As a result, pupils from the affected schools were admitted to nearby public schools, while 29 other schools were put on notice to improve their facilities by the beginning of the next term, failure to which they would face closure.
