Lawrence Cherono, the 31-year-old Kenyan athlete, has had a remarkable season, winning both the Boston and Chicago marathons in April and October 2019, respectively.
Cherono, who trains in Kaptagat, Uasin Gishu County, expressed his desire to represent Kenya at the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, saying, "I am very ready to represent my country. I will be more than happy if I will be selected in Kenya's team for the Olympics," in an interview with Citizen Digital.
Cherono's impressive performances have been characterized by his ability to maintain his speed and observe the pack, often resulting in victories in the final sprint. He clocked 2:07:57 in Boston and 2:05:45 in Chicago.
The athlete has also called upon the government to expedite the construction of stadiums in the region, citing the difficulty of traveling long distances for training.
Cherono's comments come as Kenya faces stiff competition from its East African neighbors, Uganda and Ethiopia, despite finishing second at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
