The Kenyan Premier League will go ahead as planned, despite financial struggles faced by some clubs.

At a recent meeting of the KPL Governing Council, it was decided that the league would not be suspended, a decision that was largely expected given the opposition from only a few clubs.

However, the governing council's decision has raised concerns about the league's financial stability, with some clubs struggling to honour their obligations due to a lack of sponsors and financial resources.

As Sofapaka boss Elly Kalekwa pointed out, 'How did they get licenses to run their clubs if they can't have cash to attend all the games in a season?'

The league's rules state that any team that dishes out three walkovers will be kicked out, which could lead to a reduced number of teams participating in the league.

Kenyan Premier League boss Jack Oguda has appealed to the government to provide a short-term financial solution to facilitate the running of the league, stating that some teams are struggling to honour both local and international matches.

With the government having sent the league's sponsors packing, it is now up to them to clean up the mess and provide a way forward for the league.

As the KPL communique puts it, 'We would like to formally plead with the Government to step in and provide a short-term financial solution to facilitate the running of the league.'
