On Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kinoru Stadium, Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi commended the Meru County Assembly members for their decision to reject the Punguza Mizigo Bill 2019, which he believed was not properly thought out.

Published on October 21, 2019, Murungi emphasized that as a county, they are eagerly awaiting other initiatives towards a constitutional amendment.

However, he clarified that they will welcome any initiative that advocates for the disbursement of more funds to the counties.

"We understand that the BBI report is almost ready and will be released soon. We are going to read it looking keenly at one thing. If it does not increase funds allocation to counties we shall oppose it," said Murungi.

He expressed his readiness to engage in dialogue with any party proposing constitutional amendment initiatives as long as they prioritize more funds for the counties.

Murungi also emphasized the importance of Kenya's multi-ethnic community, stating that each tribe must feel part of the national government.

He proposed that the BBI should create more positions at the national level, but with each county represented at the national government or in the executive through appointments of Cabinet Secretaries, principal secretaries, and chief administrative secretaries.

Furthermore, the Meru Governor called on the government to increase budgetary allocation to the judiciary to enable it to carry out its mandate effectively and expedite cases.

He also urged the government to support farmers by providing them with subsidized fertilizers, certified seeds, and a sustainable market for their produce.
