On October 21, 2019, the Business Daily reported that theatre and radiology equipment leased to county governments for specialized healthcare were lying idle in 25 counties.
Devolution of the health docket to county units aimed to ensure service delivery trickled down to the grassroots, but lack of basic amenities like water and electricity has hindered the project, despite billions of shillings being spent.
According to the Ministry of Health, unreliable power supply, shortage of trained personnel, inadequate anesthetists, and space have rendered 11 theatres, 16 radiology equipment, and a renal unit idle, despite the devolved units paying millions of shillings annually.
The Ministry of Health must ensure that the medical kits are put to good use, resolving the problem with speed to end the suffering of the common citizen.
