Kenyan athletics is mourning the loss of Patrick Cheruiyot, a talented marathoner who passed away on October 18, 2019, in Nairobi after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
According to reports, Cheruiyot had participated in the Graz Marathon in Austria just last weekend but dropped out of the race at 3km due to a headache. He was examined by the medical team but was not diagnosed with anything serious at the time.
However, upon his return to Kenya, Cheruiyot was admitted to a local hospital where a CT scan revealed a brain hemorrhage on October 16, 2019.
Cheruiyot was a promising athlete who had participated in several marathons, including the Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi in 2018, where he finished third.
He leaves behind a widow, Winny Cheruiyot, and two children.
The news of Cheruiyot's passing was first shared on the Volare Sports management page, which paid tribute to the athlete, saying, 'Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Winny, his 2 children, his family at large and the teammates and close friends from Kapkitony. We will miss Patrick as a member of our team.'
Many Kenyans have condoled with the athlete's family, expressing their shock and sadness at his untimely death.
