On Sunday, October 20, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the revamped Mama Ngina Waterfront Park, a project redeveloped at a cost of Khs 460 million.
The park, situated on 26 acres overlooking the Kilindini Channel in Mombasa, has been transformed into an integrated urban tourist attraction site.
As part of the refurbishment, the waterfront was landscaped and paved with concrete blocks, a state-of-the-art amphitheatre, the Kilindini Cultural Centre, ablution blocks, and two main gates were constructed, among other developments.
President Kenyatta had commissioned the construction of the park in January 2019, expressing his expectation that the facility would help restore Mombasa's status as a top tourist destination in the region.
The park's redevelopment, undertaken by Suhufi Agencies, was completed in time to host the Mashujaa Day celebrations, which were held in Mombasa County as part of a rotational hosting of certain national celebrations by counties.
During the official opening ceremony, Deputy President William Ruto, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, and other senior government dignitaries, including Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala and Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho, accompanied the President.
