As the tea bonus payment season approaches, sex workers in Bomet Town are bracing themselves for another disappointing season. According to reports, the women, who travel from as far as Mombasa, are expecting a low turnout of reckless and randy farmers who would normally splurge their bonuses.
However, this time around, the sex workers are complaining of bad business due to the meagre bonus paid to farmers. One of them lamented, "Unlike other seasons, this one is terrible. Business is at its lowest,"
Another sex worker, who traveled from Nairobi, expressed her frustration, saying, "Ordinarily, on a good night when bonuses have been paid, we make close to Sh10,000 or even more. Since we arrived here early this month, making Sh5,000 a night is proving to be difficult,"
Despite the low business, the sex workers are still trooping into other tea-growing areas in the region, including Silibwet, Mogogosiek, Sotik, and Kembu. They are now calling upon the government to pay more attention to agriculture, as they are beneficiaries of the trickledown effect.
