On October 21, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the Mama Ngina Waterfront to the public, marking the culmination of a 10-month construction and face-lift project that he personally supervised.
The 460 million shilling project, undertaken by local company Suhufi Agencies, transformed the 26-acre park into an integrated urban tourist attraction site, overlooking the Kilindini Channel in Mombasa.
The refurbishment included landscaping, paving the waterfront with concrete blocks, construction of an amphitheatre, the Kilindini Cultural Centre, ablution blocks, and two main gates.
The park is designed to support a 24-hour economy and features a new jetty for water taxis, cultural exhibitions, shopping, dining at open-air fresco restaurants and cafes, and relaxation areas.
President Kenyatta commissioned the project in January, aiming to restore Mombasa's glory as a top tourist destination in the region.
The official opening was marked by a retinue of entertainment activities, including fireworks displays, traditional dances, and acrobatic shows, attended by Deputy President William Ruto, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, and other dignitaries.
