Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya's electoral defeat in the Meru Gubernatorial seat and his subsequent loss of relevance in national politics have left him facing the biggest challenge of his career.

His woes deepened after three of his key allies, Mr Kaberia, former Igembe North MP Ntoitha M'Mithiaru, and businessman Kiriinya Nairuti, defected to Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi's camp.

Mr Kaberia, who was former Governor Peter Munya's running mate in the 2017 election, held a closed-door meeting with Mr Murungi on Saturday morning before declaring their move to decamp in the evening.

Mr Murungi expressed his willingness to work with his opponents in implementing his development agenda, stating, 'I am pleased that the top leaders of PNU and strong supporters of the former county government have resolved to throw their support behind me and my administration.'

However, the PNU termed them as impostors and requested for disciplinary action to be taken against them, stating, 'PNU NEC takes great exception with impostors claiming to hold any office [who] have decamped. They have moved out of their own personal volition and in no way represent PNU.'

Published on October 21, 2019, the PNU statement further urged the appointing authorities to take stern disciplinary action against the individuals.
