Published on October 21, 2019, Betin's decision to close 500 retail outlets has left 2,500 Kenyans facing unemployment.

The firm cited the government's hard stance as the reason for issuing redundancy notices to its staff.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Kenya has been used as a dumping ground for electronic waste from developed countries.

Director of Environmental Education, Mr. Ayub Macharia, stated that the government will implement strict regulations to deter imports of obsolete electronics.

The Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations will hold importers and sellers of electronic gadgets responsible for disposing of them when they can no longer be used.

A deposit return scheme will be implemented, requiring sellers to add a fee to the gadget price, which buyers can either get back when returning the product or use to purchase a new one.

The regulations are set to be in full force by March 2020.
