On October 21, 2019, thousands of Kenyans from all walks of life flocked to the newly renovated Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa to celebrate Mashujaa day, honouring Kenya's heroes and heroines.
The event, which was the first of its kind at the park after a major renovation costing Sh640 million, was led by President Uhuru Kenyatta and attended by top government officials, including First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The celebrations featured a display of maritime prowess by the Kenya Navy, a flypast by the Airforce, and colourful dances from various coastal communities. Veteran broadcasters Leonard Mambo Mbotela, Sammy Lui, and Ali Salim Manga were also recognised and honoured for their contributions to traditional entertainment.
The highlight of the day came when President Uhuru Kenyatta honoured World Marathon holder Eliud Kipchoge with the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) award for his outstanding world conquering performances.
"I wish to invite and recognise Eliud Kipchoge with the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart, Eliud has proved that everything is possible by becoming the first human being to complete a marathon in under 2 hours," President Kenyatta said.
Amid cheers and ululations, President Kenyatta bestowed the golden sash and a medal to the athlete, drawing a curtain to the festivities.
