On October 21, 2019, Mombasa was abuzz with heightened security measures ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations, which were set to take place at the Mama Ngina Water Front.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was scheduled to preside over the event, which was expected to attract hundreds of dignitaries, including World Marathon Champion Eliud Kipchoge.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho assured the public that all security arrangements were in place to guarantee safety, saying, "I can confirm that everything at the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park is ready for Mashujaa Day celebrations. Since we expect a high turnout, we have created a space big enough to accommodate all Kenyans who are planning to join us in marking this momentous day."
Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata urged Kenyans to cooperate with security agencies, warning, "The public is advised to be vigilant and report to the police any suspicious-looking individuals, incidences/activities or abandoned luggage."
The celebration was held under the theme 'Nchi Yangu, Jukumu Langu, Mimi ni Shujaa' (My Nation, My duty, I am a hero).
