The Kenyan Premier League will proceed as planned, despite the financial struggles of some clubs. The decision was made after a meeting of the KPL Governing Council.
According to the council, the few clubs that had requested the suspension of the league were unable to garner enough support to see their proposal through.
However, the council acknowledged the reasonableness of the clubs' stand, citing the chaotic economic conditions and lack of sponsors as major contributing factors to their financial struggles.
As a result, the league is expected to continue with a high risk of walkovers, which could lead to teams being disqualified if they accumulate three or more.
The Kenyan Premier League boss, Jack Oguda, released a statement appealing to the government for financial assistance to prevent the league from collapsing.
Oguda specifically requested that the government fast-track the completion of the Nyayo National Stadium, which he believes would be an ideal venue to showcase the league.
However, the Nyakundi Report notes that this appeal may fall on deaf ears, given the government's history of making promises without following through on them.
Ultimately, the ball is in the government's court, and it is up to them to provide a short-term financial solution to facilitate the running of the league.
