On October 19, 2019, Lukenya Assistant County Commissioner Elizabeth Karitu lost the keys to a container storing national examination papers, sparking a chain of events that led to her arrest and interdiction.
According to Machakos County Commissioner Elizabeth Maina, Ms. Karitu claimed she had left the keys in her car, which was broken into at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi, leaving her handbag and the keys missing.
Ms. Maina confirmed that Ms. Karitu was arrested and interdicted, with plans to replace her. The official is currently being detained at Parklands Police Station in Nairobi as investigations continue.
Security has been heightened around the container, and efforts are underway with the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to replace the padlock immediately.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i had warned last week that no excuse for losing keys would be tolerated, and Deputy County Commissioners would be held individually accountable.
