On October 20, 2019, a tragic training accident occurred at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and injuries to three others.
The incident took place during a training event at the base, where a Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over into water around 3:20 a.m. The vehicle was part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team.
According to Maj. Gen. Tony Aguto, commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division, three soldiers were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were taken to Winn Army Community Hospital for treatment.
Two of the injured soldiers were treated and released from the hospital, while the third was transferred to Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Ga., with non-life-threatening injuries.
General Aguto expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, stating, “Today is a heartbreaking day for the 3rd Infantry Division, and the entire Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield community. We are extremely saddened by the loss of three Dogface Soldiers, and injuries to three more. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families affected by this tragedy.”
Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, located in Hinesville, Ga., is a major training facility that covers 288,000 acres and features various ranges for tank and armored fighting vehicle gunnery, helicopter gunnery, and small arms training.
