On Sunday, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a significant breakthrough in the murder case of Catholic Priest Michael Maingi Kyengo. They recovered bank withdrawal receipts from the priest's bank accounts, which were discovered in a house rented by the main suspect, Michael Mutunga, two days after the priest's murder.
The receipts were among several items found in the house, including newly purchased household items worth Ksh.60,000, supermarket receipts, and blood-stained clothes that have been taken to the government chemist for forensic analysis.
Additionally, the garage where the deceased's vehicle was changed from black to white on October 12, 2019, was identified. The body of the Catholic priest from Machakos, who was killed and buried in a shallow grave, was exhumed on October 16, 2019.
According to reports, the priest was waylaid on October 8 while traveling from Tala to his Thatha parish in Masinga. He had been on leave and had gone home to look after his parents. Witnesses stated that the priest was in the company of a worker who was fencing his compound in Tala when he was kidnapped.
Reports indicate that the priest was strangled to death and buried near a seasonal river in Embu. Another suspect, 44-year-old Solomon Mutava, was arrested on Friday in connection with the gruesome murder after he was allegedly found in possession of the priest's car, which he drove from Embu to Kilifi.
