On Mashujaa Day, October 20, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded Eliud Kipchoge with the Elder of the Order of Golden Heart (EGH), the highest civilian state commendation.
As the world marathon record holder, Kipchoge was hailed by Uhuru, Deputy President William Ruto, and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a hero during the celebrations in Mombasa County.
EGH is awarded to individuals in recognition of outstanding or distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities. The president awards it upon the advice of a National Honours and Awards Committee in the president's office.
Upon receiving the honor, Kipchoge expressed gratitude, saying 'Asante sana (thank you very much)'. The president commended Kipchoge as a great inspiration to many people in the world, saying his achievement reminded many that they should not limit themselves to the ordinary but go an extra mile.
Uhuru also praised another marathon great, Brigit Kosgei, who holds the world female record, saying with her achievement, Kenya was now basking in glory as it kept two important world athletes' honors to itself.
Earlier, Deputy President William Ruto said he had been asked by the president to bring Kipchoge to the Mashujaa celebrations, saying 'The president asked me to come with Eliud Kipchoge and he is here.'
