Kenya Morans, a second-string side, made history by defeating South Africa's World Sevens Series core side 19-14 in the Safari Sevens final at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday, October 20, 2019.
Geoffrey Okwach scored the first try for Kenya just a minute into the game, giving the hosts an early 7-0 lead after Johnston Olindi added the extras.
South Africa threatened to restore parity but were adjudged to have caused an infringement, resulting in a penalty for Kenya, which they capitalized on with captain Geoffrey Oluoch scoring their second try.
Olindi missed the resultant conversion, but Kenya's defense continued to cause problems for the South Africans, with Alvin Otieno powering his way to Kenya's third try.
Olindi successfully converted for a 19-0 advantage at the interval, and although South Africa got a consolation try in the second half, Kenya's dominance ensured they were crowned champions.
South Africa's Mngandi Luyanda scored their first try, with Darren Adonis adding the conversion for a 19-7 score, but a lapse in concentration allowed the South Africans to score again in the closing stages of the game.
However, the buzzer had already rung, and Morans were crowned champions.
